José Maya in “Latente: A Flamenco Journey”

Latente takes the audience to the deepest realms of a flamenco dancer’s soul.  Choreographed by José Maya, this program follows him on a quest of self discovery while an ancestral spirit guides him in this search to freedom and understanding. He will be joined by special guest artist, the legendary Juana la del Pipa as well as by singers José Valencia and Manuel Tañé and guitarist El Perla.

Jose Maya was born in 1983 to a Gypsy family of intellectuals: artists, painters, actors and writers including dancer Fernanda Romero, painter Antonio Maya and the singer Gabriel Moreno.

He began his dance career at the young age of 9, sharing the stage with top artists including Antonio Canales, Juan Ramírez, Joaquín Grilo and Enrique Morente. Over the years he has won many prestigious dance awards and has performed all over the world with many of Flamenco’s biggest stars including Farruquito, El Farru, Canales, Gerardo Núñez and Karime Amaya. Maya has also opened shows for international pop artists like Marc Anthony and has collaborated with Spanish artists such as El Güito, Ramón el Portugués, Javier Barón, La China, Estrella Morente and Ketama.

In 2011 José Maya was featured at the Bay Area Flamenco Festival and toured the U.S. with Festival Flamenco Gitano and he has performed twice at the Festival Flamenco Internacional de Albuquerque (2010, 2015).

Juana la del Pipa is a powerhouse Gypsy singer from Jerez de la Frontera.  Juana has performed around the world and with her nephew Antonio El Pipa and she is featured on several cds, including Los Juncales de Jerez (1998) and Mujerez (2009).

José Valencia (Joselito de Lebrija) is known for his outstanding voice, his intense delivery and his deep knowledge of the Gyspy flamenco-singing traditions. He is one of the few artists to have received three of the most prestigious awards in the flamenco world.

Manuel Tañé, born in Jerez de la Frontera, studied singing under the great masters Luis Moneo, Luis Parillo and Enrique “El Extremeño”. He started performing at the age of 16, and has gained national and international acclaim from his performances in theaters worldwide.

Guitarist El Perla, from Sevilla, began his career at the age of 15 accompanying Antonio Núñez “Chocolate.” Known for his purity of sound, he has since worked with a who’s who of artists from Fernanda and Bernarda Utrera to Farruquito.
