Linda Vega began her professional career in 1973, and has since achieved high acclaim as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. During the ten years she was based in Spain, she toured extensively throughout Europe performing with Spain’s major dance companies, including Rafael de Cordoba, Luisillo, “El Camborio”, the legendary Antonio, and many others. She was also featured in several films for Spanish television. Her theater credits include New York’s Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Milan’s La Scala, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, and locally the Japan America Theater, John Anson Ford Theater, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Lobero Theater, Fountain Theater, the Los Angeles Theatre Center.
In 1982 she formed her own company, now called “Danzas de Espana” The company performs nationally as well as abroad. As artistic director, choreographer, and principal dancer, Linda Vega received the Dance Kaleidoscope’s Vanguard Award in 1982 and Groundcover Award in 1990. In 1997 the Decker’s Corporation presented her with the Tiffany Award for her contribution to Old Spanish Days Fiesta. Danzas de España performs nationally in concert venues, as well at large corporate events. Vega is joined by Southern California’s leading professional dancers, singers and musicians. The Children’s Flamenco Dance Theatre is the junior company, comprised of children ages eight and up. The junior company has won numerous prizes and awards in dance competitions. The newest company is called “FLAMENCO! Santa Barbara”, and features the best flamenco dancers in Santa Barbara.
The Linda Vega Dance Studio in Santa Barbara has contributed toward shaping the course of Spanish dance by presenting innovative music, costumes and choreographies, while preserving the traditional spirit of flamenco. This studio has produced thirty Spirits and Junior Spirits in the twenty-five years since its inception. In 2007, Vega was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the city of Santa Barbara, as well as best dance studio in the Santa Barbara News Press “Reader’s Choice” awards, and finalist in the Independent’s “Best of” for best dance troupe in 2007 and 2008.
A prominent figure in the flamenco world, Ms. Vega is invited frequently to appear as guest artist for California’s major dance companies. She teaches in Santa Barbara and conducts workshops throughout the United States. Her credits also include teaching at UCLA, UC Irvine, and artist in residency program at the Los Angeles County High School for the Performing Arts. Vega’s extensive background in dance, including ballet (certified Cecchetti teacher), modern, folk and Spanish has gained her recognition throughout the dance community. She has served on panels for the California Arts Council and Cultural Affairs Office of Los Angeles.
